Agyo

Agyo by shodoboy
Agyo, a photo by shodoboy on Flickr.

The "Nio" are Hindu Gods incorporated into Buddhism as protectors against evil spirits. If you look at their mouths, you will notice that one has its mouth open and the other has its mouth closed, said to represent life and death, the beginning and the end.The Niō’s fierce and threatening appearance is said to ward off evil spirits and keep the temple grounds free of demons and thieves. In some ac...counts, the Niō were said to have followed and protected the Historical Buddha when he traveled throughout India. They have since been adopted by the Japanese into the Japanese Buddhist pantheon. Each is named after a particular cosmic sound. The open-mouth figure is called “Agyō,” who is uttering the sound “ah,” meaning birth. His close-mouth partner is called “Ungyō,” who sounds “un” or “om,” meaning death.See More

Flaming Mara

My Back Pages
Originally uploaded by shodoboy
Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Tapas, Seville

Tapas, Seville
Originally uploaded by shodoboy.
This was taken inside a famous Tapa bar in Seville. Note the hanging hams. Tapa(s) are snacks, or small dishes. Extremely fun. I think the word may have connectons with the English word 'tap' , meaning to stop , (ie fill up)

Tapas are marked by their simplicity.

"Life is simple. We are complex. Life is simple and the simple thing is always the right thing" (Oscar Wilde)

Slumbers in G major

Slumbers in G major
Originally uploaded by shodoboy.
Tell me not in mournful slumbers
Life is but an empty dream
For the soul is dead that slumbers
And things are not what they seem

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal
Dust thou art
to dust returnest
Was not spoken of the soul

Not enjoyment and not sorrow
Is our destined end or way
But to act that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today

Art is long and Time is fleeting
And our hearts though stout and brave
Still, like muffled drums are beating
Funeral marches to the grave

In the worlds broad field of battle
In the bivouac of life
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no future however pleasant!
Let the dead past bury its dead
Act- act in the living present
Heart within and God overhead

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time

Footprints that perhaps another
Sailing over lifes solemn main
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother
Seeing, shall take heart again

Let us then, be up and doing
With a heart for any fate
Still achieving, still pursuing
Learn to labor and to wait
